# Virals: West Ham ‘launch’ bid to sign Benfica star Darwin Nunez

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2022/01/29/virals-west-ham-in-talks-to-sign-stade-reims-striker-hugo-ekitike/) have reportedly ‘launched’ a late bid to sign Benfica star [Darwin Nunez](https://readwestham.com/2021/12/07/virals-west-ham-have-joined-the-race-for-benfica-striker-darwin-nunez/) before the transfer deadline passes.

The Hammers had been expected to bring a striker to the [London Stadium](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) during the January window but have so far failed in any attempt.

Now, on the [final day](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60111057) moves are permitted, an audacious late swoop for a 22-year-old Nunez could be forthcoming.

According to a report from the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10458229/West-Ham-launch-sensational-minute-bid-Benficas-45million-rated-striker-Darwin-Nunez.html), as cited by [https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews](https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews)[Sky Sports News](https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews)on Twitter, the Irons will attempt to sign the Uruguayan.

The report also mentions [failed swoops](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/29/west-ham-leeds-reject-raphinha-bid) to raid Premier League rivals of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips.

This season Nunez – tipped to become the [‘best in the world’](https://www.archysport.com/2020/10/this-boy-will-be-the-best-in-the-world-and-i-will-lose-him-in-no-time/) by Jorge Jesus – has [scored 20 times and provided two assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdaten/spieler/546543) in just 25 appearances across all competitions.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Valued at £28.8million and under in Portugal contract until 2025 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/546543)), West Ham would likely have to match a previous [£42.7million asking price](https://www.teamtalk.com/newcastle-united/darwin-nunez-price-drop-steven-nickson-talks-benfica-quality-signing) to make this deal happen.

So late in the window and with the [seven-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/546543/verein_id/3449) star currently in South America with Uruguay, this is a logistical nightmare to complete before the deadline.

Albeit a wholly worthwhile venture given the ace’s quality and the [levels of interest](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/man-city-darwin-nunez-transfer-25123287) from around Europe, this is one David Moyes may just have left a little too late.
