# Virals: West Ham starlet Goncalo Cardoso set for loan switch to Real Betis

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2022/01/20/virals-west-ham-place-ben-brereton-diaz-top-of-transfer-targets/) youngster Goncalo Cardoso is reportedly set to join Real Betis on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old has spent the [first half of the campaign](https://www.sofascore.com/player/goncalo-cardoso/943596) at Swiss Super League side FC Basel but has recently fallen down the pecking order.

Despite [injuries decimating](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10288835/West-Ham-David-Moyes-confirms-transfer-priority-new-defender-Zouma-Ogbonna-injuries.html) David Moyes’ first-team squad in recent weeks, there has been no talk of Cardoso returning to East London.

Instead, according to a report from [Diario Record](https://www.record.pt/internacional/paises/inglaterra/detalhe/portugues-goncalo-cardoso-emprestado-pelo-west-ham-ao-betis-ate-final-da-epoca), as cited on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/Record_Portugal/status/1483833479964073984), the young centre-back could be on the way to join Manuel Pellegrini’s UEFA Champions League chasers.

The report claims that the loan deal includes an option to buy the [five-cap](https://readwestham.com/that%20the%20loan%20deal%20includes%20an%20option%20to%20buy) Portugal Under 20 starlet.

This season Cardoso has made [three appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/goncalo-cardoso/leistungsdaten/spieler/587106) across all competitions whilst in Switzerland.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Valued at just £450,000 (Transfermarkt), it seems unlikely that the Portuguese youngster will fetch a big fee for the Hammers.

However, at 21 and [without a senior opportunity](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/goncalo-cardoso/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/587106) in three years as an Iron, it also seems unlikely that there is much of a future at the London Stadium for Cardoso.

Cashing in now and perhaps putting funds towards [much-needed additions](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) would be the best outcome for all parties.
