# Virals: West Ham have ‘joined the race’ for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/12/07/pundit-believes-deal-for-brilliant-nat-phillips-is-possible-for-west-ham/) have reportedly ‘joined the race’ to sign highly-rated Benfica striker [Darwin Nunez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/30/virals-melissa-reddy-confirms-liverpool-scout-attendance-at-ucl-clash/).

The Hammers are believed to have moved in alongside [Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) rivals Brighton & Hove Albion in a possible pursuit of the 22-year-old.

Nunez has been attracting plenty of admiration in recent months and it was [reported](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/man-city-darwin-nunez-transfer-25123287) scouts from multiple European giants were in attendance to watch the Uruguayan in October.

The high profile presence [included representatives](https://twitter.com/MelissaReddy_/status/1443297017686593541?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1443297017686593541%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Freadliverpoolfc.com%2F2021%2F09%2F30%2Fvirals-melissa-reddy-confirms-liverpool-scout-attendance-at-ucl-clash%2F) from Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United and Leeds United.

Now according to a report from [The Argus](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/19764907.west-ham-join-brighton-race-benfica-star-darwin-nunez/), as cited by [West Ham Fan Zone](https://twitter.com/WHUFCFZ) on Twitter, the Irons are keen on Nunez.

The report claims that West Ham may see the [six-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/profil/spieler/546543) ace as the ‘perfect player’ to support Michail Antonio.

So far this season the man tipped to become [‘world-class’](https://www.goal.com/en/news/benfica-boss-expecting-darwin-nunez-to-be-sold-for-more-than/1p3yuqyd7vesn1wk3f3q01kr6t) by head coach Jorge Jesus has [scored 11 times and provided two assists in 17 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdaten/spieler/546543) across all competitions.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Currently valued at just £18million and under contract in Portugal until 2025 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/546543)), signing Nunez for the mooted £25million fee would be an incredible piece of business.

Albeit predominantly a recognised centre-forward, the Uruguayan can operate as a second striker [as well as on either wing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/546543) – allowing Moyes to be flexible with the ace.

Given the sheer levels of interest in the youngster, it’s unlikely West Ham would get a free run at the capture, however, if the club could pull this off it would be a marker of the [progress made](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/potter-west-ham-david-moyes-22316542) in recent times.
