# Virals: West Ham enter talks to terminate Winston Reid’s contract

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/09/04/gabby-agbonlahor-expects-declan-rice-to-leave-west-ham-next-year/) have reportedly opened talks to terminate the contract of central defender [Winston Reid](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/01/west-ham-fans-show-their-admiration-for-winston-reid/).

The former Irons’ favourite returned from a temporary loan spell at Brentford at the start of the season and is [yet to feature](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4209/Winston-Reid/overview) competitively this season.

New arrivals and [crippling injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/verletzungen/spieler/37526) have seen the 33-year-old New Zealand international slip down the pecking order at the London Stadium.

According to a report from [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-west-ham-hold-talks-about-terminating-reid-contract/), as cited by [WHU News](https://twitter.com/WHUNewsApp/status/1434143603383808002) on Twitter, the Hammers have begun discussing an early contract termination.

The report claims that the [25-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/nationalmannschaft/spieler/37526/verein_id/9171) defender could agree to a ‘handsome pay-off’ in order to cut short the [two years remaining](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/profil/spieler/37526) on a deal in east London.

Reid hasn’t played regularly for West Ham in three years following a knee injury suffered against Swansea City in 2018 and has since been [sent out on loan](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/transfers/spieler/37526) to MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

Last season the powerful Kiwi made [11 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/37526) for Brentford in helping the Bees earn promotion to the top-flight.

Valued at £1.35million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/marktwertverlauf/spieler/37526)), this would come as a financial blow to the club both in terms of expenditure and missing out on a potential fee.

However, since the late arrival of Kurt Zouma, Reid has become [highly unlikely to feature](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) at any stage of the season and deserves to find first-team football again.

Whatever happens, the 6’3 ace has been a superb servant to the Hammers – making [223 outings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/37526) in claret and blue, giving his prime years to the club.
