# Virals: West Ham have ‘made enquiries’ for RC Lens defender Jonathan Clauss

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/08/18/virals-potential-west-ham-owner-taken-to-task-on-takeover-bid/) have reportedly ‘made enquiries’ regarding RC Lens right-back Jonathan Clauss this summer.

Irons’ boss David Moyes is keen to strengthen the [squad](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) before the transfer window closes in 13 days.

The 29-year-old French defender could be a potential option for both the Hammers and Everton following a [superb](https://www.sofascore.com/player/jonathan-clauss/821728) 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign.

According to a report from [Homme du Match](https://www.hommedumatch.fr/articles/fildactualites/rc-lens-rcl-les-sang-et-or-vont-toucher-le-pactole-grace-a-varane_2576020), as cited by [Everton Talks Nsno](https://twitter.com/NsnoTalks/status/1427686126500950016) on Twitter, West Ham have already made their intentions known for Clauss.

The report claims Lens will block a potential Premier League switch for their uncapped Frenchman – who was named among the [top five players in France](https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/lequipes-top-5-ligue-1-players-of-the-season-have-an-average-rating-of-6-026/) by reputable newspaper L’Equipe last season.

Clauss scored [three times and registered seven assists](https://readwestham.com/newly-promoted) in 34 Ligue 1 outings during a successful newly promoted campaign in 2020/21.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Valued at £7.2million and under contract until 2023 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonathan-clauss/marktwertverlauf/spieler/175639)), signing the full-back would represent a healthy outlay for the club.

Having only signed [Vladimir Coufal](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/29/paddy-kenny-laments-vladimir-coufal-over-contract-situation/) last summer and the Czech star’s impact in east London, as well as Ben Johnson’s emergence – enquiries for such an experienced performer, would raise questions as to the motive.

Perhaps the [reported issues](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/players/west-ham-vladimir-coufal-contract-21150241) with Coufal’s contract run deeper than speculated.
