# Virals: David Moyes convinced West Ham will sign a defender this summer

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/08/16/virals-agent-confirms-bid-from-west-ham-for-igor-gomes/) manager David Moyes has admitted a desire to sign a defender before the transfer window closes on August 31.

The Irons’ boss has desperately been trying to strengthen the ranks at the London Stadium all summer as the [squad](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) prepares for a season with Europa League action.

Despite only being able to [add World Cup-winning goalkeeper Alphonse Areola](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/july/29-july/west-ham-united-sign-world-cup-winning-goalkeeper-alphonse-areola) so far, the Hammers got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start on Sunday with a 4-2 success over Newcastle United.

Following the match, Moyes confirmed a defensive signing remains the priority for the Hammers, as quoted by [Football London](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/david-moyes-west-ham-transfers-21317714) and cited by [West Ham Gossip](https://twitter.com/westham_gossip/status/1426942294654177285) on Twitter.

This comes after the club allowed Fabian Balbuena to leave as a free agent and young centre-back [Frederik Alves joined Sunderland](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/august/13-august/frederik-alves-joins-sunderland-loan) on a season-long loan.

On Sunday, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson [played 90 minutes](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12382160/newcastle-2-4-west-ham-hammers-second-half-comeback-sees-premier-league-season-off-to-a-winning-start) as a partnership as Issa Diop and 17-year-old Jamal Baptiste watched on from the bench.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

It had seemed the Hammers were [nearing a deal](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/west-ham-transfer-news-nikola-milenkovic-kurt-zouma-b949959.html) for Fiorentina central defender Nikola Milenkovic.

However, as that deal [seemingly hits the rocks](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12380548/tottenham-in-talks-to-sign-nikola-milenkovic-after-west-ham-move-stalls), it’s promising to hear the desire to strengthen remains.

Linked with the likes of Kurt Zouma, James Tarkowski and [Nayef Aguerd](https://readwestham.com/2021/08/12/virals-west-ham-have-offer-rejected-for-rennes-defender-nayef-aguerd/) in recent weeks, Moyes will be busy attempting to deal with an arrival sooner rather than later.
