# Virals: Negotiations for Alphonse Areola continue ‘very slowly’

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/27/noel-whelan-backs-west-ham-to-win-nat-phillips-transfer-pursuit/) are believed to be continuing negotiations over a deal for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper [Alphonse Areola](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/14/virals-west-ham-closing-in-on-alphonse-areola-loan-signing/).

Originally discussions started for a [loan move with an option to buy](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11685/12355531/west-ham-transfer-news-hammers-in-talks-over-alphonse-areola-deal-with-paris-saint-germain) at the end of the 2021/22 season.

However, the Ligue 1 giants perhaps favoured either an [immediate permanent sale](https://www.claretandhugh.info/keeper-deal-at-stalemate/) or a loan with an obligation to buy included.

According to French outlet [RMC Sport](https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/transferts/psg-le-point-sur-les-pistes-pour-rico-et-areola_AV-202107270443.html), as cited by [West Ham News & Views](https://twitter.com/WestHamViews_) on Twitter, the negotiations remain ongoing.

Areola spent last season on loan at Fulham and the Frenchman [suitably impressed](https://www.sofascore.com/player/alphonse-areola/96531) for the Cottagers despite ultimately suffering relegation to the Championship.

The 28-year-old was part of the [World Cup-winning](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alphonse-areola/erfolge/spieler/120629) squad for France in 2018 and has also made [107 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alphonse-areola/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/120629) for the Parisien club previously.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Signing Areola would likely be a nod towards a [changing of the guard](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) as a future number one at the London Stadium.

Although current occupant Lukasz Fabianski [continues to maintain a high level](https://www.sofascore.com/player/lukasz-fabianski/15479) of performance, at 36 years old, David Moyes is right to operate a contingency.

Facing competition from the [newly signed Italian hero Gianluigi Donnarumma](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11820/12355851/transfer-news-gianluigi-donnarumma-joins-paris-saint-germain-on-five-year-deal) and ex-Real Madrid star Keylor Navas in the French capital, it’s of little wonder Areola would seek another move away.

Valued at £15.3million and under contract until 2023 in Paris ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alphonse-areola/marktwertverlauf/spieler/120629)), the Hammers must be confident of striking a low-cost deal.
