# Virals: West Ham target Sam Johnstone undergoes dramatic price cut

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/23/trevor-sinclair-makes-a-case-for-declan-rice-to-stay-at-west-ham/) may have been handed a transfer boost as reported target [Sam Johnstone](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/15/virals-west-ham-have-bid-rejected-for-west-brom-goalkeeper-sam-johnstone/) sees a dramatic drop in price tag.

The Hammers are well known to be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer and had been [heavily linked](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11685/12355531/west-ham-transfer-news-hammers-in-talks-over-alphonse-areola-deal-with-paris-saint-germain) with a move for Paris Saint-Germain stopper Alphonse Areola.

However, West Brom ace Johnstone had originally [been the main target](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57791313) for the Irons.

According to a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2719829/2021/07/22/uncertainty-over-sam-johnstones-future-has-left-west-brom-with-a-goalkeeping-conundrum/), as cited by [West Ham Fan Zone](https://twitter.com/WHUFCFZ/status/1418142759416999936) on Twitter, the recently released Baggies have slashed the 28-year-old’s valuation.

The report also mentions interest from North London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal whilst a fresh claim from [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-critical-update-on-west-ham-bid-for-johnstone-as-moyes-plan-revealed/) says that the Irons have made an £11million bid for the England man.

Despite battling against the drop all season and [ultimately falling](<https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56960423#:~:text=Arsenal%20recorded%20back%2Dto%2Dback,more%20games%20remaining%20(four).>) into the Championship, Johnstone was a beacon of light in the Midlands and earned an impressive [7.03 Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/player/sam-johnstone/98427) for his efforts across 37 Premier League outings.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Valued at £7.2million and in the final 12 months of a contract at the Hawthorns ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/marktwertverlauf/spieler/110864)), the new fee is far more reasonable than the previously [mooted](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/west-bromwich-albion/2021/07/15/west-brom-reject-west-ham-bid-for-sam-johnstone/) £20million demand.

Having recently earned [senior England recognition](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/nationalmannschaft/spieler/110864/verein_id/3299), Johnstone’s stock is certainly on the rise as he enters the peak age for a ‘keeper.

Likely to usurp both Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph [based on form](https://www.sofascore.com/tournament/football/england/premier-league/17) from last season, David Moyes would certainly be making a definitive statement in making this deal happen.
