# Virals: Blow to West Ham as Jesse Lingard ‘wants to fight’ for role

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/17/virals-premier-league-trio-interested-in-west-ham-defender-issa-diop/) have been handed a double blow in their pursuit of Manchester United attacking midfielder [Jesse Lingard](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/14/virals-west-ham-still-pushing-for-jesse-lingard-signing/) this weekend.

Following a successful loan spell with the Hammers, manager David Moyes [made no secret of a desire](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/west-ham-transfer-news-jesse-lingard-man-utd-david-moyes-hope-b935221.html) to land the 28-year-old on a permanent basis this summer.

However, a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2710749/2021/07/17/transfer-window-state-of-play-analysis-of-kane-grealish-pogba-griezmann-haaland-deals-and-more/?source=twitteruk) has claimed that the England ace is ‘minded’ to stay at Old Trafford and compete for a squad role.

That news was followed by yet another dent to the Irons’ hopes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke positively to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/12358532/jesse-lingard-part-of-man-utds-plans-for-new-season-says-ole-gunnar-solskjaer) about the ace’s future in Manchester after a 2-1 victory over Derby County.

> Twitter: ![🗣](https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.0.1/svg/1f5e3.svg) “He’s come back bright, confident and with lots of energy. I think everyone saw what he did at the end of last se… https://t.co/P8dLWfnuqy (@SkySports)

The Norwegian boss went on to say: “He was one of the positives. He’s a Manchester United player and he wants to fight for his place. He’s still in my plans. I expect him at Man Utd at the start of the season.”

Lingard barely featured last season prior to a loan move to east London in February, finishing the season with [nine goals and five assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesse-lingard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/141660) from just 16 Premier League outings.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

In truth, this is a deal that has looked less and less likely as time has gone by.

Despite making a huge impact and seemingly rekindling a career at the London Stadium, signing Lingard always looked to be [too expensive an outlay](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-lingard-asking-price-21043887) for a position that won’t be regarded as a top priority by the West Ham hierarchy.

Whilst the ace’s arrival would’ve been greeted favourably, landing a new recognised striker, central midfielder and [central defender](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11685/12309377/west-ham-the-summer-transfer-window-and-what-they-need-to-do#:~:text=A%20centre%2Dback%2C%20a%20left,qualification%20for%20Europa%20League%20football.) must take precedent.
