# Virals: West Ham have bid rejected for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/15/alan-hutton-believes-tammy-abraham-would-be-a-fantastic-signing/) have reportedly seen a bid rejected for West Brom goalkeeper [Sam Johnstone](https://readwestham.com/2021/07/06/virals-west-ham-target-sam-johnstone-expected-to-leave-this-summer/).

The Hammers have been [linked](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/west-ham-readying-bid-tottenham-sam-johnstone-transfer) with the 28-year-old previously and seem to face competition from Tottenham for the signature.

Despite [reports](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/west-ham-transfer-news-alphonse-areola-loan-b945678.html) elsewhere suggesting the Irons are closing in on Paris Saint-Germain stopper Alphonse Areola, it would seem David Moyes hasn’t given up on Johnstone.

According to [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2707770/2021/07/14/west-brom-reject-bid-from-west-ham-for-sam-johnstone/), as cited by [David Ornstein](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1415424722402164744) on Twitter, the east Londoners have tried their hand.

Despite suffering relegation with the Baggies last season, the Englishman’s performances were [hailed](https://twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1360980792734846984) as ‘sensational’ at times by Gary Lineker.

In 37 Premier League outings, Johnstone earned an outstanding [7.03 average Sofascore rating](https://www.sofascore.com/player/sam-johnstone/98427) while keeping six clean sheets.

Capped at various junior levels before making a [senior debut for England](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/nationalmannschaft/spieler/110864/verein_id/3299) in June, the ex-Manchester United academy ace is expected to move on before the end of the window.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Valued at £7.2million and in the final 12 months of a deal at the Hawthorns ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/marktwertverlauf/spieler/110864)), the Hammers are right to remain firm on their valuation.

Paying in excess of £10million for a ‘keeper in this window, with other areas a [greater priority](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/transfer-news/) would be misplaced.

Moreover, if the club can pull off a [loan deal with an option to buy](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11685/12355531/west-ham-transfer-news-hammers-in-talks-over-alphonse-areola-deal-with-paris-saint-germain) for Areola, the expenditure would be far less and allow Moyes to suitably strengthen elsewhere.
