[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/06/29/virals-west-ham-target-nikola-milenkovic-available-for-8-5m/) youngster Freddie Potts has signed a first professional contract with the Hammers.

The 17-year-old has come through the Academy of Football and has been rewarded for a [promising 2020/21 campaign](https://www.sofascore.com/player/freddie-potts/1089582) with a three-year deal.

Potts has spoken the [club’s official website](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/June/29-June/FreddiePottssignsfirstprofessionalcontractatWestHamUnited), as cited by [West Ham United](https://twitter.com/WestHam/status/1409821445295910917) on Twitter, about the delight at signing with his boyhood club.

Predominantly a defensive-minded midfielder, the son of [former Iron](https://www.premierleagueheroes.com/steve-potts/), Steve Potts, became a mainstay in Dmitri Halajko’s Under 23 side in 2020/21.

Overall, the talented teenager made 27 appearances for the club’s youth sides last term – including [eight in the Premier League 2](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/freddie-potts/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/698164/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB21/verein/9267), scoring once against Leicester City.

[Described](https://www.kumb.com/story.php?id=135449) as ‘outstanding’ by Halajko following the clash with the Foxes, Potts has certainly been catching the eye at the London Stadium.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Following in the [footsteps of family members](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/west-ham-tough-love-made-lampard-chelsea-legend/90wea9n9d04f1ow098n8qt8rm) seems to be a tradition in east London.

Whether Potts can go on to [emulate his father](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2019/february/11-february/hammer-life-steve-potts-reveals-his-favourite-west-ham) remains to be seen, but this new deal is a sign that the club has every faith the ability is there to do so.

[David Moyes](https://readwestham.com/2021/06/11/virals-david-moyes-signs-new-deal-and-eyes-star-english-duo/) could well turn to the youngster for domestic cup action in the upcoming campaign as the Scotsman looks to use the depth of the [squad](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) given the European commitments.
