# Virals: West Ham goalkeeper David Martin signs one-year contract extension

Experienced [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/06/14/virals-west-ham-linked-with-boavista-forward-alberth-elis/) goalkeeper [David Martin](https://readwestham.com/2020/03/04/west-ham-fans-love-what-david-martin-did-in-the-tunnel-after-saints-win/) has signed a one-year contract extension until June 2022.

The 35-year-old, a boyhood Claret and Blue supporter, has extended a stay at the London Stadium having [signed on a free transfer](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48494899) at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Son of [Hammers favourite](https://www.transfermarkt.com/alvin-martin/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/117194), Alvin, the stopper has become a mainstay in the club both on the playing side and in a coaching capacity.

Confirmed by the [club’s official website](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/june/14-june/david-martin-extends-contract-west-ham-united), as cited by [West Ham United](https://twitter.com/WestHam/status/1404415923205906432) on Twitter, Martin will be an Iron at least until the end of the upcoming 2021/22 season.

Within the confirmation, it is confirmed that the [former England Under 19 international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-martin/nationalmannschaft/spieler/15930/verein_id/21340) will continue to deputise for Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph, whilst also mentoring the young ‘keepers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the calibre of the first-choice duo, Martin [failed to make a single appearance](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-martin/leistungsdaten/spieler/15930) in David Moyes’ side during 2020/21.

The London-born ace does hold a special place in Hammers hearts, however, after an [emotional debut for the club](https://talksport.com/football/636689/west-ham-david-martin-tears-dad-chelsea-premier-league/) when keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory against Chelsea in November 2019.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

This is a win, win situation for the Irons, albeit possible Martin could find himself even further down the pecking order should the [Sam Johnstone speculation](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/west-ham-readying-bid-tottenham-sam-johnstone-transfer) come to fruition.

Either way, as a popular figure around the camp and as a player who has experienced the [highs and lows](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-martin/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/15930) – Martin certainly has the wherewithal to offer a hand to the [likes of](https://www.whufc.com/teams/academy/squad) Jacob Knightbridge and Joshua Reach.
