# Brian Deane believes Sam Johnstone would be worthwhile addition at West Ham

Former Premier League striker Brian Deane believes West Brom goalkeeper [Sam Johnstone](https://readwestham.com/2021/05/08/kevin-phillips-tips-sam-johnstone-to-take-west-ham-number-one-spot/) would be a ‘good candidate’ for [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/05/20/virals-carlton-cole-full-of-praise-for-west-ham-manager-david-moyes/) this summer.

David Moyes could be set to enter the market for a new stopper as both [Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/march/05-march/team-news-moyes-offers-fabianski-and-randolph-updates) begin to suffer from injuries.

The 36-year-old Pole was set to start against Johnstone’s West Brom on Wednesday – only to [pick up a knock](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/west-ham-dealt-injury-blow-20635839) in the warm-up.

Recently [relegated](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) with the Baggies, much has been made as to whether Johnstone [could extend his own stay](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9507491/West-Brom-demand-18m-goalkeeper-Johnstone-amid-Tottenham-West-Ham-Leeds.html) in the Premier League into next season.

Despite further interest in the 28-year-old from Tottenham, the Hammers are [believed](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-west-ham-leapfrog-tottenham-to-become-favourites-to-sign-johnstone/) to be leading the pursuit.

This had led former [Sheffield United frontman](https://www.premierleague.com/players/488/Brian-Deane/overview), Deane, to have his say to [Football FanCast](https://www.footballfancast.com/west-ham-united-news/exclusive-brian-deane-says-sam-johnstone-would-be-good-addition-for-west-ham-e122) on the possibility of the 6’4 ‘keeper pitching up at the London Stadium.

> He’s saved more than anyone else in the league and certainly when I’ve seen him, he’s looked a very good player. I think he would be a good candidate. He’s not let anybody down at West Brom and that could be a good move.

This season Johnstone has been a beacon of hope for the Midlands club in what has been an otherwise [dismal](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/west-brom-sam-allardyce-resigns-coach-b1850453.html) one-year top-flight stay.

In [36 Premier League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sam-johnstone/leistungsdaten/spieler/110864), the England youth international has earned an average [Sofascore rating of 7.03](https://www.sofascore.com/player/sam-johnstone/98427).

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Signing Johnstone would be a shrewd move from the Irons.

Fabianski has no doubt been a [magnificent servant](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lukasz-fabianski/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/29692) to the east Londoners, however, time is far from on the Polish star’s side.

If West Ham are going to continue to compete among the upper echelons next term and beyond, a goalkeeper of [Johnstone’s quality](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/105603/Show/Sam-Johnstone) and age would be a major statement.
