# Pundit predicts Leicester City victory over West Ham

Former top-flight defender turned BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson backed Leicester City to beat West Ham 2-1 on Sunday when writing his regular [prediction column for BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56633070).

In what looks set to be an important encounter in the [race for a top-four finish](https://www.premierleague.com/tables), Lawrenson has suggested the Hammers could see themselves edged out when they welcome the Foxes to the London Stadium this weekend.

Both managers can be delighted with [how their sides have performed this season](https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/leicester-city/form-guide), with David Moyes’ men, in particular, transforming their fortunes having [narrowly avoided relegation](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/july/17-july/mark-noble-above-everything-i-just-want-west-ham-win) last term.

However, having lost [Declan Rice to a knee injury](https://talksport.com/football/860133/declan-rice-west-ham-knee-injury/) suffered during the international break and [Michail Antonio to a hamstring issue](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/apr/09/michael-antonio-could-miss-rest-of-season-west-ham-david-moyes) on Monday, the Irons suddenly look light – perhaps leading to Lawrenson’s prediction:

> Even without the injured Declan Rice, West Ham were impressive against Wolves on Monday evening, but this is a much bigger test for them. Leicester were outplayed by Manchester City last time out, but I don’t think you can really read too much into that – Brendan Rodgers’ team are still a very good side.

The 63-year-old went on to cite Leicester’s [failure to finish inside the Champions League qualification positions](https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/leicester-fixtures-top-four-race-5190872) last season, despite being in a commanding position – however, the former Liverpool ace expects Rodger’s side not to make the same mistake again.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

There’s no doubt that the injury blows suffered in the last week have put a huge dent in the Hammers chances of a top-four finish.

This game is [amongst the most difficult contests](https://www.whufc.com/fixtures/first-team/fixtures-and-results) left on paper, and if Moyes can mastermind a result there remains every chance Europe could remain on the cards.
