# Rio Ferdinand tips Jesse Lingard for permanent Manchester United departure

Former [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/16/west-ham-3-0-sheffield-unitedplayer-ratings/) and Manchester United defender [Rio Ferdinand](https://readwestham.com/2021/01/12/rio-ferdinand-praises-declan-rice-says-summer-move-inevitable/) has backed current Hammers loanee [Jesse Lingard](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/15/jesse-lingard-explains-decision-to-join-west-ham/) to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis in the near future.

The 28-year-old has been in sparkling form since arriving at the start of this month, with [two goals on his Irons debut](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12207768/aston-villa-1-3-west-ham-jesse-lingard-makes-dream-debut-scoring-twice-as-david-moyes-men-win-at-villa-park) endearing himself immediately to the Hammers faithful.

Ferdinand, who also represented England on [81 occasions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rio-ferdinand/nationalmannschaft/spieler/3235/verein_id/3299) after leaving east London for [£23.4m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rio-ferdinand/transfers/spieler/3235) in 2000, has suggested that the attacking midfielder’s time could be up with his parent club. He told [BT Sport](https://twitter.com/btsportfootball/status/1361370679128522761?s=20): ”I think they’ve \[Manchester United\] moved past him with the players they’ve recruited, he doesn’t feature and hasn’t done for so long.”

The retired centre-back went on to say that Lingard’s ‘aim’ for the remainder of the season should be to earn a permanent move to the London Stadium. The loanee’s first three outings for West Ham have earned the attacking midfielder an average [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/jesse-lingard/205508) rating of 7.53 – higher than another [recent Hammers signing](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/january/29-january/said-benrahma-completes-permanent-west-ham-united-transfer) in [Said Benrahma](https://www.sofascore.com/player/said-benrahma/354808) with just 6.6.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Having [not featured for so long](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9262295/Jesse-Lingard-says-Ole-Gunnar-Solskjaer-didnt-chance-lockdown.html) under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it’s hard to see a route back into Manchester United’s first team regardless of his performances with the Hammers.

David Moyes’ determination [to not have his fingers burned](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/west-ham/transfer-striker-david-moyes-premier-league-b1790054.html) in the January transfer market seems to be paying dividends with Lingard.

More or less a try-before-you-buy deal, should the 28-year-old continue to perform at his current level, West Ham should certainly attempt to make the move permanent in the summer.
