# West Ham to rival Premier League clubs for Mikkel Damsgaard

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/12/manchester-united-keeping-tabs-on-tomas-soucek/)will join a host of Premier League clubs in pursuit of Sampdoria winger [Mikkel Damsgaard](https://readwestham.com/2021/01/26/west-ham-linked-with-danish-starlet-mikkel-damsgaard/), according to a report from the [Daily Star](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/southampton-west-ham-leeds-rival-23482507).

The Hammers will face competition from Southampton, Leeds and [London rivals Tottenham](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/tottenham-monitoring-sampdoria-winger-mikkel-damsgaard) for the Danish youngster, who has risen to prominence this season in Serie A.

Damsgaard, who is just 20, has [two goals and four assists](https://www.transfermarkt.com/mikkel-damsgaard/leistungsdaten/spieler/540941) in the Italian top flight this term and was handed his [senior international debut](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikkel-damsgaard/nationalmannschaft/spieler/540941/hauptwettbewerb/FS/verein_id/3436) last November.

Noted for his [pressing and creativity](https://www.sofascore.com/player/damsgaard-mikkel/907072), the young Dane has [appeared in all but one](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikkel-damsgaard/leistungsdaten/spieler/540941) of Sampdoria’s league games this season and has quickly drawn attention from elsewhere. Indeed, his average of [1.8 successful dribbles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/401168/Show/Mikkel-Damsgaard) per game would put him second among West Ham’s squad for that metric, eclipsing the 1.5 match average of Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/29/Show/England-West-Ham)).

The [Daily Star](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/southampton-west-ham-leeds-rival-23482507) claimed that Spurs have asked to be kept informed of any developments regarding a potential sale, while Italian giants Juventus are also monitoring the starlet’s progress.

Having only signed for Sampdoria for [£5.85m in September](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikkel-damsgaard/transfers/spieler/540941) from his boyhood club Nordsjaelland, Damsgaard is still [under contract until 2024](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikkel-damsgaard/profil/spieler/540941) and has already seen an [increase in his market value](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mikkel-damsgaard/marktwertverlauf/spieler/540941).

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Signing anyone ahead of Premier League rivals, especially Tottenham, is always a bonus for West Ham. Where Damsgaard is concerned the Hammers are [relatively blessed](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad) in wide attacking positions.

However, signing a promising youngster can never be deemed as a negative, and offering an alternative to both Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen whilst enhancing strength in depth is another plus as the Irons[potentially fight on further fronts](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) next season.
