# ExWHUemployee says West Ham could sign free agent striker

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/10/ivan-toney-intriguing-transfer-option-west-ham/) could seek out a free agent as the striker situation takes a turn for the worse at the London Stadium, according to reliable insider [ExWHUemployee](https://twitter.com/ExWHUemployee).

Ex has claimed on his [West Ham Way](https://www.patreon.com/posts/injury-updates-47359641) podcast that [David Moyes](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/09/david-moyes-hint-ademipo-odubeko-west-ham-first-team-plans/) could be forced to delve into the market of available free agents as the Hammers count the cost of Tuesday night’s trip to Manchester United.

With Michail Antonio [rested due to fatigue](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/february/08-february/team-news-david-moyes-offers-michail-antonio-update) caused by a relentless schedule and being the last recognised striker in the squad, winger Andriy Yarmolenko [deputised at centre-forward](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/3517364) in place of the 30-year-old. During the match, the Ukrainian [suffered knee ligament damage](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/west-ham-man-united-injury-19806195) and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

That injury leaves Moyes with an almost inevitable crisis on his hands, with only teenager Ademipo Odubeko [seemingly available to lead the line](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/west-ham-united/kadernachposition/verein/379) in next Monday’s clash with Sheffield United.

Ex said on the [West Ham Way](https://www.patreon.com/posts/injury-updates-47359641): ”The situation may (although this was not what Moyes or the club wanted) force the club to look at the free transfer market.”

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

The decision not to sign a striker having allowed [Sebastien Haller to leave](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/january/08-january/sebastien-haller-joins-ajax) hasn’t taken long to backfire on the Hammers.

Two potential options remain available as free agents in [Diego Costa](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/transfer-news/west-ham-diego-costa-transfer-19748132) and Ahmed Musa, with a proposed move to West Brom for the latter [reportedly looking doubtful](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9231593/West-Brom-risk-LOSING-chance-sign-free-agent-Ahmed-Musa-Baggies-cash-strapped-January.html).

Albeit not an illustrious list, there are [numerous players of repute with Premier League experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spieler/vertragslosespieler/statistik/1/plus//galerie/0?ausrichtung=Sturm&spielerposition_id=14&land_id=alle&altersklasse=&wettbewerb_id=alle&seit=alle&yt0=Show) (and in many cases [goals](https://www.premierleague.com/players/3154/Daniel-Sturridge/stats)) from which to choose among those currently without a club.

[Histrionics](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/chelsea/11883809/Chelsea-forward-Diego-Costa-given-three-match-ban-but-Arsenals-Gabriel-gets-suspension-rescinded.html) and injury-prone tendencies aside, the Hammers only need a striker to see them through until the end of the season, and a number those available should still have the wherewithal to perform at the top level.
