# Report: West Ham target Billy Gilmour wanted by Southampton

Reported [West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/02/01/report-west-ham-could-sell-fabian-balbuena-permanently/) target [Billy Gilmour](https://readwestham.com/2021/01/28/west-ham-fans-divided-billy-gilmour-loan-rumours/)is ‘in talks’ to join fellow Premier League club Southampton on loan until the end of the season according to the[Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9208209/Chelsea-starlet-Billy-Gilmour-talks-Southampton-loan-latest-snub-Thomas-Tuchel.html).

That report has been reiterated by [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/transfer-centre) this morning as the talented Scot goes in search of first-team football for the remainder of this campaign.

The Saints may fail in their own attempt however as [Matt Law quashed the chances](https://readwestham.com/_wp_link_placeholder) of the teenage star heading out on loan, with Tuchel planning on introducing him into his plans this term.

The Hammers were [linked with a loan swoop](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/west-ham-transfers-news-moyes-23395557?2=)for the 19-year-old prior to confirming the arrival of Jesse Lingard last week.

[Lingard’s arrival](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/january/29-january/west-ham-united-sign-england-international-jesse-lingard-loan)meant the necessity for a player in a similar mould such as Gilmour was instantly diminished.

An attacking midfielder with[an eye for a pass](https://totalfootballanalysis.com/player-analysis/billy-gilmour-2019-20-scout-report-tactical-analysis-tactics), the Scotland Under 21 international has been [highly sought after](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9207029/Chelsea-midfielder-Billy-Gilmour-wants-loan-away-order-make-Scotland-Euro-squad.html) since Tomas Tuchel left the teenager out of his first two matchday squads.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Prior to the signing of Lingard, attempting to bring Gilmour to the London Stadium on loan would’ve been[considered a major coup](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/transfer-news/west-ham-chelsea-billy-gilmour-19731005) for the Hammers.

Instead, Moyes opted for the more experienced, tried and tested version in the [former England star](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesse-lingard/nationalmannschaft/spieler/141660/verein_id/3299).

Furthermore, owing to currently having [two domestic loan players on the books](https://www.whufc.com/teams/first-team/squad), the Irons would have to make Craig Dawson’s deal permanent in order to sign another loanee.

Should Southampton resurrect a deal in the final hours, time will tell who chose the right option as the Irons await Lingard’s debut in claret and blue.
