# Boost for West Ham as Jurgen Klopp confirms further Liverpool injury woes

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2021/01/29/west-ham-agree-deal-to-sign-jesse-lingard-on-loan/) have been handed a potential boost ahead of the visit of reigning Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday as their manager [Jurgen Klopp confirmed](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/joel-matip-injury-update-liverpool-23405161) yet another injury absentee at his end.

The Reds have already been counting the cost of injuries to central defensive pairing [Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/joe-gomez-virgil-van-dijk-19270845) before their victory over Tottenham on Thursday, which came at yet more expense.

In the aftermath of the match, Klopp confirmed that Liverpool’s[last remaining senior centre-back](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) Joel Matip had picked up an ankle ligament injury which “[looks serious](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/joel-matip-injury-update-liverpool-23405161)“.

The German was already [without stand-in centre-back Fabinho](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/423892-fabinho-injury-update)for the match against Spurs, and he admitted that Matip’s absence for Sunday’s trip to the London Stadium has created a “[massive problem](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/joel-matip-injury-update-liverpool-23405161)” for his side.

Matip was replaced at half-time by 23-year-old Nat Phillips, who [was Man of the Match](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12119834/nat-phillips-man-of-the-match-liverpool-premier-league-debut-praised-by-jurgen-klopp-and-jamie-carragher) when the Irons travelled to Anfield earlier in the season.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Whilst the defensive issues are cause for optimism for David Moyes and West Ham, Liverpool’s return to [their dangerous attacking best](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55744293) on Thursday won’t go unnoticed by the Irons management.

That said, the Hammers have [rarely been better placed](https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/west-ham-united/form-guide) to challenge the champions at the London Stadium, and given the [respective form of the two sides](https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/liverpool/form-guide), Moyes will have his charges believing they can get something from the game.

After [missing the Anfield clash](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/3421737), a fit and firing [Michail Antonio](https://readwestham.com/2021/01/29/west-ham-fashion-sakala-transfer-interest-cover-antonio/) will be relishing the chance to pit his significant wits against Phillips and perhaps an out-of-position Jordan Henderson as Liverpool’s likely centre-back pairing.
