West Ham want Brandon Williams on loan

Signing a striker may be a priority for West Ham as they enter the final week of the transfer window, but it is not the only key position being targeted at the London Stadium.

According to The Sun, West Ham are a principal suitor in the race for Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams.

The home-grown defender has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford amid competition from the likes of Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.

Williams has just a week left to salvage his dreams of playing in Euro 2020 for England, according to The Sun, as he looks to seek a loan move for the second half of the season.

Having previously made an impression with England boss Gareth Southgate, the youngster is keen to seek out more senior minutes. He has been restricted to just six appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils this season.

Having attracted interest from Southampton and Newcastle in the Premier League, there was also reported summer interest from Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

Williams has been held in high regard by United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Upon making his first start for the club in a Europa League draw with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in autumn 2019, Solskjaer said of the full-back:

[He’s] top class, absolutely top notch. You won’t see a better full debut from a full back anywhere. The boy is just going to improve and improve.

He’s got the right mentality. I’m very pleased for him.

Signing a striker is certainly a priority, but the left-back position is rightfully an area of concern for West Ham.

With Arthur Masuaku recovering from surgery, he is still a long-term absentee. That leaves just Aaron Cresswell as a natural left-back option – and Williams could be the ideal available prospect to join the Irons on loan.

matchday.
