# West Ham ‘scout’ Rico Henry ahead of January transfer window

[West Ham](https://readwestham.com/2020/12/28/west-ham-fans-slam-mark-noble-performance-brighton/) have been keeping an eye on Brentford full-back [Rico Henry](https://readwestham.com/2020/08/06/west-ham-join-leeds-in-the-race-for-brentfords-rico-henry/), according to a report from [The Athletic.](https://theathletic.com/2284088/2020/12/27/transfer-news-live-rumours/)

They claimed that the Hammers have ‘scouted’ the 23 year old for some time and were [close to making a move](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8580011/Brentford-Fulham-stars-end-Premier-League-lose-play-final.html) during the off-season transfer window this year.

With the January window opening in a few days’ time, David Moyes seemingly remains [set on signing a left-back](https://www.90min.com/posts/6586855-west-ham-transfers-6-left-backs-the-hammers-could-realistically-target-this-summer) who can act as an understudy for, and ultimately replace, Aaron Cresswell – and Henry could still be in the frame for a move to east London.

The England under-20 international [played every match last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rico-henry/leistungsdaten/spieler/339556/plus/0?saison=2019) for Brentford in the Championship as their campaign [ultimately ended in play-off final disappointment](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53603848) at Wembley.

Availability is definitely a strong point for the Bees full-back as he already has [23 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rico-henry/leistungsdaten/spieler/339556/plus/0?saison=2020) to his name this season, chipping in with one goal and two assists along the way.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Described as a [‘forward-thinking’ player](https://theathletic.com/2271332/2020/12/27/rico-henry-brentford/) by Jon Whitney, who was his coach at Walsall, Henry could soon be rubbing shoulders with [former Brentford teammate Said Benrahma](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/said-benrahma/gemeinsameSpiele/spieler/290532/gegner/339556/kriterium/2/wettbewerb//liga/0/verein/0) once again.

Cresswell is still [operating to a high level within the Premier League](https://www.sofascore.com/player/aaron-cresswell/43443) and there seems no immediate panic over replacing the 30-year-old, although that time is fast approaching.

One stumbling block for the Irons in their reported pursuit of Henry is the continued development of Ben Johnson, who was [deployed as a left-wing back against Brighton](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/december/28-december/ben-johnson-contributing-goal-amazing-feeling), and the club could be reluctant to block his progress.

Having struck a deal with Brentford in the summer for Benrahma, the Irons could and possibly should return to the west London club for their [£4.05m-rated full-back.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rico-henry/marktwertverlauf/spieler/339556)
