# Opinion: Robert Snodgrass Facing Career Crossroads

West Ham midfielder [Robert Snodgrass](https://readwestham.com/2020/03/17/west-hams-snodgrass-decision-should-anger-fans/) may have some big decisions to make over his future in the coming months as [appearances at London Stadium](https://www.premierleague.com/players/4558/Robert-Snodgrass/overview) decline.

The Scotland international was widely tipped to leave the club during the last transfer window, with Scottish champions [Celtic leading the chase for his signature](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfer-news/robert-snodgrass-set-celtic-loan-22789921), although no deal materialised and the 33-year-old remained a Hammers player.

During the summer, Snodgrass himself was reticent to call time on his own capabilities to have a positive influence as part of David Moyes’ squad, telling the [club’s official website](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/september/16-september/robert-snodgrass-i-still-feel-ive-got-so-much-more-give) he still has ”so much more to give”.

However, despite the fighting talk, the [28-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robert-snodgrass/nationalmannschaft/spieler/22614/verein_id/3380) Scotland man has struggled to break into Moyes’ Premier League first team plans, [playing just one minute of top-flight football this season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robert-snodgrass/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/22614/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/379) as a late substitute in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Tottenham last month.

A midfielder known for his [accurate set-piece delivery with a delightful left-foot](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/what-robert-snodgrass-could-bring-22790334), Snodgrass’ [main action has come in the Carabao Cup](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robert-snodgrass/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/22614/saison/2020/wettbewerb/CGB/verein/379) this term, with three appearances in which he has scored twice and supplied one assist.

Signed from [Hull in 2017](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48837944#:~:text=West%20Ham%20midfielder%20Robert%20Snodgrass,a%20further%2012%2Dmonth%20option.), the winger – who can [play anywhere behind the central striker](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robert-snodgrass/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/22614) – has featured [83 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robert-snodgrass/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/22614/verein/379) for the Hammers.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

A [boyhood Celtic fan](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/robert-snodgrass-trained-rangers---5176196) born in Glasgow, the time could be nigh for Snodgrass to undergo a homecoming of sorts.

Notching up [26 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/robert-snodgrass/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/22614) in all competitions last term was a decent return for the midfielder. However, with Jarrod Bowen’s January arrival, the [improvement of Pablo Fornals](https://theathletic.co.uk/2182714/2020/11/06/pablo-fornals-west-ham-david-moyes/) and the [summer signing of Said Benrahma](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/october/16-october/west-ham-united-seal-said-benrahma-loan-deal#:~:text=West%20Ham%20United%20is%20pleased,to%20make%20the%20transfer%20permanent.), – who himself is [yet to start a match for the club](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/said-benrahma/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/290532/verein/379) – the path to any Premier League first-team action must seem a near-impossibility for the Scot.

Ukrainian Andriy Yarmalenko is another in a similar position to Snodgrass who would argue he [isn’t getting the game-time](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andriy-yarmolenko/leistungsdaten/spieler/69015) his credentials deserve.

With his [contract expiring next summer](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2019/july/02-july/robert-snodgrass-pens-west-ham-united-contract-extension#:~:text=West%20Ham%20United%20is%20delighted,by%20a%20further%2012%20months.) and seemingly no talks of a new deal on the table, a move for both parties in January may be a favorable solution.
