Mundo Deporitvo have reported that West Ham are set to battle fellow Premier League side Everton for Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez.

Hammers’ boss David Moyes has made no secrets about his desire to sign another centre-back before the end of the transfer window, and now it seems he faces stiff competition for his latest target.

The report claims the Bilbao man has a release clause set at just £28 million, a highly inciting proposition for both clubs.

Everton have flexed their financial muscle in recent seasons and may be a difficult club to compete with for the signature of Nunez.

However, the Hammers were willing to shell out £30 million-plus for James Tarkowski from Burnley, an avenue which looks to have stalled, so perhaps Moyes will at least be in the race.

At 23-years-old and with one full Spain cap to his name, Nunez represents outstanding value if that reported release clause is correct.

The central defender has become a regular in the Bilbao side since his arrival in 2016 from Basconia.

Nunez played 20 times in La Liga last season and has also played Europa League football previously.

Perhaps with the Tarkowski door closing, the Nunez one may open, and at a slightly cheaper price for a younger player, this could well the better option.
