West Ham could line up a shock move for World Cup-winning playmaker Mario Gotze, according to The Express.
The Hammers have been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, who is available on a free transfer after his contract at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund expired at the end of last season.
The report claims David Moyes’ side have made an enquiry for the 63 times capped Germany international, however, the East London club face stiff competition for his signature with Monaco and Roma also chasing the 2014 World Cup winner.
The ex-Bayern Munich man, now 28, had the world at his feet following his winning goal for Germany in the final against Argentina, but his career path has plummeted somewhat since, albeit through no real fault of his own.
In 2017, Gotze was diagnosed to be suffering from myopathy, a disease of the muscles which affects their functionality.
He has since recovered and has been able to manage his injury issues and the attacking midfielder made 21 appearances for Dortmund last term, scoring three goals.
Despite perhaps not reaching the heights once expected, Gotze still possesses top-class ability and should the Hammers pull off the move it could be a tremendous coo for the club,
A fit and firing Gotze would solve multiple problems of a lack of creativity at the business end of the pitch but, obviously, such a signing comes with huge risks.
West Ham were bitten hard when they signed Jack Wilshere down to a big-money contract and they should give real consideration to any decision they make surrounding Gotze as they could easily find themselves in a similar situation.
