A West Ham United insider has claimed the club have held talks about the possible transfer of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Shane Duffy.

The talks have also been reported in numerous publications, including The Irish Independent.

The Republic of Ireland international played 19 times in the Premier League for the Seagulls last season and could prove to be an adequate replacement for Fabian Balbuena and Winston Reid, who are both are expected to depart the London Stadium for good this summer.

David Moyes has already made it clear he wants to improve his defensive options this summer and told The Evening Standard he prefers centre-backs with more top-level experience and Duffy certainly fits that bill with over 100 Premier League appearances.

It is believed the Hammers face competition from Scottish Champions Celtic, the club for whom the 28-year-old is a boyhood supporter.

It won’t be the first time West Ham and Celtic have crossed paths in this transfer window, last week the East Londoners agreed on the sale of Albian Ajeti to Neil Lennon’s side.

Duffy will be well known to Hammers fans as the central defender scored a memorable volley in the 2-2 draw between the two clubs last January.

As Moyes pursues experienced defenders, Duffy could be a great addition to the squad, especially given his relatively low expected asking price of around £2millon.
