# West Ham make £6.8m offer for Gonzalo Montiel

West Ham have made an offer for River Plate defender Gonzalo Montiel thought to be worth €7.5 million (£6.8 million), according to a report from [Goal.](https://www.goal.com/es/noticias/river-montiel-west-ham-oferta/bc0pet56xo3912tua6x4tevif)

Hammers boss David Moyes is on the lookout for a right-back this summer following the departures of Jeremy Ngakia and Pablo Zabaleta, leaving him with the inconsistent Ryan Fredericks and the inexperienced Ben Johnson as his only options in that position.

The report claims that officials at the London Stadium have made a move to sign the 23-year-old Argentine, making a £6.8 million offer for his services ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Montiel, who has two caps for Argentina’s national side, has an £18m release clause, [according to La Pagina Millonaria](https://lapaginamillonaria.com/riverplate/La-competencia-para-Gonzalo-Montiel-que-surgio-en-el-West-Ham-mercado-de-pases-altas-y-bajas-20200802-0004.html). However, it is believed that his club could sell the tough-tackling full-back for a lot less than that price due to the current financial climate.

Montiel has never scored in 51 appearances for the Argentinian Premier League club, however, he has made three assists in 19 league appearances for River Plate this season.

### Read West Ham Verdict

As is often the case with South American footballers, Montiel’s ownership is split, therefore currently he is only 80% owned by River Plate themselves, meaning West Ham would have to negotiate the deal with two separate parties.

The likelihood is the deal could cost more in the region of £8.5 million to be completed.

With Moyes desperate for cover at right-back, this deal makes perfect sense for all concerned and at around £8.5 million, this deal could prove to be very good business for a 23-year-old Argentine international right-back.
