# Hammers fans can’t get enough of Payet’s Old Trafford goal

[On this day](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35738603) in 2016, Dimitri Payet scored one of the best free-kicks in recent memory against Manchester United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford and many West Ham United fans still can’t get over it.

The Frenchman lined up the set-piece from about 30 yards out and curled the ball beyond David De Gea, striking the post on its way in.

Anthony Martial netted late on in controversial fashion to [force a replay](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35738603) but the match is mainly remembered for Payet’s incredible goal and the celebration that followed it in the stands.

Ten months later, the winger [left the Hammers](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2017/january/29-january/payet-departs) to join French side Marseille for £25m, revealing that he [got bored](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/mar/10/dimitri-payet-west-ham-bored-defensive) of playing for the Hammers because of their defensive tactics.

Some fans [still dislike](https://talksport.com/football/659478/west-ham-fan-boycott-dimitri-payet-owners/) Payet for the manner in which he left the club, but this free-kick certainly brings back good memories for many fans [on Twitter](https://twitter.com/vinnywhufc/status/1238374281337282561), with some loving the goal, appreciating Payet’s quality or just enjoying the celebrations in the away end.
