West Ham’s decision to keep Reid and Wilshere could be a mistake

As reported on football.london, West Ham United and David Moyes currently have no intention of letting Jack Wilshere and Winston Reid leave the club on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

We believe that this decision could be a mistake by the London club. Why?

Firstly, both players are incredibly injury prone.

As stated in the report, Wilshere has not played for the first team since last October and recently had a hernia operation, sidelining him for even longer.

As for Reid, he suffered two long-term knee injuries, with his problem in March 2018 keeping him out of action for 484 days (Transfermarkt).

Secondly, both players take up a lot of space on the wage bill.

According to data website Spotrac, Wilshere is West Ham’s second-highest-paid player whilst Reid is the club’s fifth-highest earner, getting £70,000 a week.

We feel the club can’t keep paying the duo such a high amount when they are hardly ever fit and not playing a part in the club’s objectives.

Thirdly, both players are ageing (28 and 31) and there could be younger alternatives out there. The Hammers signed 24-year-old midfielder Tomas Soucek on a loan deal and have young defenders like 23-year-old Issa Diop to call upon at the back.

Therefore, we believe that Wilshere and Reid may not be needed by Moyes next season. By keeping them, the development and progression of the younger players in the squad, like Declan Rice, could be delayed.
