Arsenal have confirmed that midfielder Lucas Torreira suffered a potentially serious injury during the club’s FA Cup victory over Portsmouth and it that could boost West Ham’s chances this weekend.
The Uruguay international was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and is currently having more tests to reveal the severity of the injury.
As quoted on the Arsenal website, manager Mikel Arteta said on Monday:
He was in a lot of pain.
He is in a brace at the moment, he will be assessed in the next few days and we will know more then.
This almost definitely rules him out of West Ham’s league clash with the Gunners this weekend and it could be a massive boost for David Moyes’ side. While the injury is a deeply concerning for the player involved, it must be noted that Torreira dominated the reverse fixture earlier this season.
The Gunners won 3-1 at the London Stadium, with Torreira playing the entire 90 minutes.
The Arsenal midfielder made 83 passes in the game, 33 more than West Ham’s passing leader Mark Noble (WhoScored), proving that he was controlling the pace and tempo of the match.
Torreira also managed to play one key pass, made one interception and have two shots in the encounter (WhoScored), showing that he was impacting the match at both ends of the pitch.
Therefore, in his absence, the Hammers could have a better chance at winning the midfield battle, leading to them potentially having a better chance at winning the match.
