West Ham were selected as the preferred bidder for the London Stadium nine years ago today, and several Hammers fans have taken to Twitter to ‘celebrate’ the anniversary.
The Hammers were selected as the preferred bidders for the site over Tottenham Hotspur back in 2011, who would go on to renovate White Hart Lane instead.
Eventually, the bid would be overturned, however, with both Tottenham and Leyton Orient taking the case to court and eventually winning, leading to the second round of bidding which the Hammers would eventually win.
However, it has not been plain sailing for West Ham since, with the move to the London Stadium being less than smooth, with several fans and media alike calling the new ground a soulless dome compared to Upton Park.
Several West Ham fans took to Twitter to react to the anniversary of the ground, with many making jokes at the expense of the Hammers ownership.
