Opinion: Should Pablo Fornals start for West Ham?

Pablo Fornals has found himself out of the West Ham team as of late, with the Spaniard being limited to substitute appearances.

The Spaniard signed for a big £25 million fee over the summer but hasn’t played 90 minutes of football since David Moyes’ first game against Bournemouth.

Since then Fornals has been limited to substitute appearances with Manuel Lanzini handed starts in front of the former Villarreal man.

But is David Moyes making the right call?

Some West Ham fans are calling on Moyes to start Fornals over Lanzini every time the team is released on a matchday, with many supporters disappointed with Lanzini’s performances in the past few matches.

Lanzini has failed to pick up a single goal or assist since returning from a shoulder injury on Boxing Day. Yet, he has been ever-present in the West Ham squad apart from the draw with Brighton.

In that game, Moyes didn’t play either player, with both limited to 5-minute cameos at the end.

Moyes has come under some stick for not starting Fornals, but surely he should consider at least handing him a shot from the start. His five goals and six assists for Villarreal last season were just some of the reasons he was brought to the club, alongside his great play on both sides of the pitch. Fornals has averaged 1.5 tackles a game throughout his career, alongside 0.8 interceptions a game, via WhoScored.

While he’s not yet shown his best form for West Ham, Fornals could be a very useful option for Moyes to have if he can harness some of the good form that he enjoyed in Spain.

Villarreal boss Javier Calleja previously hailed the Spaniard for his hard work and quality and given West Ham’s current situation near the foot of the table, those two traits could be hugely beneficial to David Moyes right now.

When he does well he is a top player, and when he is less successful, too, because of the work he does. He is a player who goes one hundred percent in each game
