Leeds United were priced out of a move for eventual West Ham United signing Jarrod Bowen, according to to the club’s sporting director Angus Kinnear, who was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds.
The winger would move to West Ham for a fee of around £22 million, joining the Hammers despite a late scare on deadline day when talks stalled over personal terms.
Leeds were linked with a move to sign Bowen throughout the window, but would miss out on the attacker. However, they did manage to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig for the rest of the season.
Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, Kinnear said:
The key is being able to find players who are ready for a move and you can extract players from their existing club.
I know the window was dominated with headlines around Che Adams and Dwight Gayle and Andre Gray and Jarrod Bowen, and actually they’re all avenues that we explored but you find out quite quickly that they’re available or not available.
While the media speculation ran and ran, actually all those clubs said those players weren’t available pretty early on and the only one that left was Jarrod and he was always going to go to a Premier League club because he wanted to play in the Premier League. Actually, what Hull received for him, he was only going to be afforded by a Premier League team.
Read West Ham’s verdict
Bowen is yet to make his West Ham debut, but many West Ham fans will be hoping he can fire them to safety in the Premier League, with the club currently in the bottom three.
The attacker’s form in the Championship shows why he could be a vital cog for West Ham, with an impressive 16 goals and six assists for Hull before he left.
West Ham will be hoping that Bowen’s addded goal threat could be enough to keep them in the top flight. There had been talk of a potential release clause should West Ham go down, which could play into Leeds’ hands if it is activated and they also are promoted to the top flight.
