West Ham offered just £10 million to sign Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge according to a report from Football Insider.
The midfielder would eventually sign for Sheffield United for a fee reported to be over £22 million, with West Ham ultimately missing out.
Football Insider report that the Hammers did table a formal offer for Berge, but only offered less than half the fee that Sheffield United eventually paid for him.
The Hammers offer of £10 million was obviously rejected, with Genk holding out for more money for their prized asset.
Sheffield United would break the £20m they paid to sign Oli McBurnie to bring Berge to the club, with Chris Wilder strengthening his squad ahead of the push to secure Europa League football at Bramall Lane.

The Hammers were nowhere close in their offer for Berge, with Sheffield United paying a lot to bring the midfielder to the club.
West Ham may have brought in Jarrod Bowen in on deadline day for a similar fee, but the fact that they considered a £10 million offer acceptable for Berge earlier in the window perhaps highlights the investment they are, or perhaps more tellingly aren’t, willing to put into the club.
The spending of the West Ham owners Gold and Sullivan has come under question as of late, with many supporters asking where promises of big investment have gone.
The failure to land Berge could see the pressure build on the ownership of the Hammers, with West Ham continuing to struggle under the management of David Moyes.
