# Manuel Pellegrini names Roberto as a big reason for his sacking

Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that a big reason he was sacked at West Ham was the failings of goalkeeper Roberto, as per [La Tercera](https://www.latercera.com/la-tercera-domingo/noticia/manuel-pellegrini-clase-politica-muy-cuestionada-falta-preparacion/995666/).

The Chilean [was sacked in December](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50362337) after a poor run of form left the Hammers in the bottom half of the table, with David Moyes coming in to replace him.

Speaking to [La Tercera](https://www.latercera.com/la-tercera-domingo/noticia/manuel-pellegrini-clase-politica-muy-cuestionada-falta-preparacion/995666/) in his native country of Chile, Pellegrini revealed that one of the big failings of his time at West Ham was the poor form of Roberto.

The Spaniard was forced into the side after the injury to Lukasz Fabianski but Roberto never really got going, and would eventually go on to concede [21 goals and only manage one clean sheet](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/roberto/leistungsdaten/spieler/37403).

Pellegrini said:

> Unfortunately, we had a major injury, from the goalkeeper \[Lukasz Fabianski\] of four months. And the performance of the second \[Roberto\] was not as expected.
>
> He had responsibility in several goals. The team was losing confidence, the results were denied and the owners decided to change.

### Read West Ham’s verdict

Pellegrini’s time at West Ham was brought to an end thanks to the poor run of form which saw them [lose nine of 12 games](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50362337)in the Premier League.

The Chilean’s signing of Roberto could be seen as a big part as to why he was sacked, with the Spaniard coming under fire from [a large amount of West Ham fans](https://www.hammers.news/club-news/west-ham-fans-frustrated-with-roberto-after-another-poor-performance/) for his performances.

However, in our view, it was a combined effort as to why West Ham failed under Pellegrini, with a combination of poor signings and questionable tactics leading to him being sacked.

Performances were simply not up to the required standard, with the Hammers failing to play well against the likes of Burnley, with West Ham going down [3-0 to the Clarets](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50271770).

Whislt Roberto may have been partly to blame for Pellegrini’s sacking, he wasn’t the only player who underperformed under the former Manchester City boss
