# West Ham target Mertens ‘evaluating’ bid from Arsenal

West Ham United transfer target Dries Mertens is currently ‘evaluating’ a bid from Premier League rivals Arsenal, according to a report on [Area Napoli](https://www.areanapoli.it/calciomercato/mertens-futuro-da-decifrare-ha-ricevuto-offerte-da-west-ham-e-arsenal-la-risposta-del-calciatore_356173.html), who quote [newspaper Corriere del Mezzogiorno](https://corrieredelmezzogiorno.corriere.it/napoli/).

The Belgian international [recently turned down](https://readwestham.com/2020/01/14/mertens-turns-down-west-ham-ahead-of-napoli-exit/) a move to the Hammers as his contract situation at Napoli worsens.

The 32-year-old’s contract [expires at the end of June](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dries-mertens/profil/spieler/56416) and as stated in the report, Napoli will make a last-ditch effort to convince him to sign a new deal.

The attacker’s form hasn’t been as good as expected so far in the Serie A this season, [netting four times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dries-mertens/profil/spieler/56416) in 16 appearances, but he was lethal in the UEFA Champions League group stages, scoring [five times in six matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dries-mertens/profil/spieler/56416).

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

We were surprised to even see a big-name like Mertens linked with West Ham this month.

The interest from Arsenal comes as a blow for the Hammers because the Gunners are more likely to be playing European football next season, which could prove to be attractive to Mertens.

He’s already turned down a move to the London Stadium, so I feel that the Hammers should turn their attention elsewhere, especially with [target Mbwana Samatta ‘on his way to England’](https://www.hln.be/de-krant/samatta-op-weg-naar-engeland~ad04fad5/?referer=http%3A%2F%2Fsportwitness.co.uk%2F).
