# West Ham agree loan deal for Gedson Fernandes

West Ham United have completed the loan signing of Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, according to [Sky Sports](https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews/status/1215254240005935104).

The 21-year-old will join the Hammers on an 18-month loan with no option to buy him at the end of the spell.

The midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Premier League rivals [Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jan/09/football-transfer-rumours-issa-diop-and-gedson-fernandes-for-chelsea) but the Hammers have come out on top in the race for his signature.

The Portuguese has only made [seven appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gedson-fernandes/leistungsdaten/spieler/337800) in the league for Benfica so far this season.

### READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Fernandes will add depth to David Moyes’ midfield options and should be competing for a starting position for the remainder of the season.

Fernandes is still young and the Hammers will be hoping to hand him more playing time than he [has got at Benfica](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gedson-fernandes/leistungsdaten/spieler/337800) so far.
