Newcastle handed Lejeune fitness boost ahead of visit

Florian Lejeune returned to action for the first time since April on Monday, featuring for the Newcastle United Under-23s against Middlesbrough.

The 28-year-old centre-back played 45 minutes for Neil Redfearn’s side in a 2-2 draw in Premier League 2 and impressed those watching.

With a trip to West Ham United on the cards for Steve Bruce’s first team this weekend, Lejeune could be in contention to enter the defence at the London Stadium.

Both sides go into the game on the back of disappointing draws; the Hammers being held 1-1 against Sheffield United and Newcastle losing a lead to draw 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Honestly speaking, it might be a bit of a stretch to stand here and confidently say that the Frenchman will line up for the opposition this weekend.

However, if he’s ready he most likely will start for the visitors. There’s no doubting his quality and Bruce won’t hesitate to slot him in alongside Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar.

Luckily for West Ham, you wouldn’t bank on him starting in East London, less than a week after making his comeback.

He’s too important for the Magpies to risk, but he seemed to catch plenty of eyes and very well could feature.
