# Flaherty’s West Ham trial ends as he heads to Newcastle

Arsenal midfielder Stan Flaherty is heading to Newcastle United for a trial after his spell at West Ham United last month was unsuccessful.

According to the [Newcastle Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-arsenal-stan-flaherty-17164090), Newcastle are keen to add depth to their squad and have therefore invited the 17-year-old to the North-East.

It seems the chances of West Ham now signing Flaherty are low and he’s already featured for the Newcastle Under-21s, starring in a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool.

### READ WEST HAM’S VERDICT

You’d imagine Flaherty hasn’t got much of a future at Arsenal if he’s being allowed to have trials at different Premier League clubs.

Aged 17 though, he’s got plenty of time to grow and develop so it’s rather surprising West Ham didn’t take a chance on him if it was indeed the club’s decision to let him go.

It’s no secret West Ham need a new midfielder to provide competition for Declan Rice’s spot as holding midfielder, with Carlos Sanchez largely unconvincing since arriving at the London Stadium.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Flaherty, but one thing for certain is that the Hammers are in need of stronger squad depth and January activity should be expected, no matter the size.
