Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent believes an interesting statistic should ring alarm bells for Manuel Pellegrini and West Ham United amid the club’s winless run.
Being held by Sheffield United at the London Stadium at the weekend meant the Hammers have already dropped nine points from winning positions in the Premier League this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Bent explained why it’s such a worrying statistic for Pellegrini and West Ham:
Yes, as it suggests the Hammers can’t see out games. After all, if they’re taking the lead in these games but aren’t achieving maximum points, then it means they need to do more as it must mean that one-goal leads aren’t enough. It means the Hammers always have to score at least twice in a game in order to get a win and that’s a very big ask.
READ WEST HAM’S VERDICT
A win against Newcastle United visit East London this weekend is crucial for West Ham; they must return to winning ways soon or the club’s free-fall down the table will continue.
It’s a worrying statistic, but one that can be improved with work on the training field and you’d expect Pellegrini to do exactly that in the coming weeks.
Being able to score a goal and then grind out a result is crucial for any Premier League side, even if they’re north or south of mid-table.
