Cullen reveals West Ham wanted him to stay – should they have kept him?

Josh Cullen regularly impressed on loan at Charlton Athletic last season in League One, helping the club gain promotion to the Championship before returning on another temporary move in the summer.

He’s continued in the same stead in a division higher and has cemented his place as a key fixture in Lee Bowyer’s plans, but he could’ve very easily stayed at West Ham United this season.

Speaking to the Athletic, cited by Inside Futbol, Cullen explained how he expected to stay at the London Stadium during pre-season before the opportunity arose to rejoin the Addicks:

I was [at Charlton] on loan last season and then all through pre-season, it seemed like I wasn’t going to go out on loan again because West Ham wanted me to stay. But then, come the end of the window, we all decided it would be best if I went out to get some regular game time in the Championship.

Sending Cullen on loan to a Championship team was, without a doubt the correct call and the consistent form he’s shown this season backs that up perfectly.

Would he provide stronger back-up to Declan Rice than Carlos Sanchez? Probably.

However, a player Cullen’s age needs to be playing football and there’s not much better experience to get than to regularly play in the Championship.

The 23-year-old more than likely has a future at the London Stadium, if he wants one, so hopefully, he can continue to catch the eye for Charlton and put pen to paper on a new contract with the Hammers.
