# West Ham missed out on Elneny this summer – but it should leave fans optimistic

West Ham United and Leicester City failed in their bid to sign Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny this summer, according to the player’s agent.

Alaa Nazmy recently told [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-ph/news/elneny-agent-reveals-milan-summer-interest-but-plays-down/125xprmtkkano1lecm2p9ok822) that the Premier League duo wanted to recruit Elneny ahead of the 2019-20 season before he moved to Besiktas on loan:

> Elneny received a lot of offers last summer, led by Leicester City, West Ham United and Valencia, but Besiktas managed to settle the deal with Arsenal.

The Egypt international spent almost four years at Arsenal but only made 46 Premier League appearances after never establishing himself as a regular starter.

West Ham’s failed attempt to sign Elneny can only be a cause of optimism amongst fans.

The club is actively looking for a quality back-up option for Declan Rice to rotate with, as Carlos Sanchez’s lacklustre tenure in East London seems to be coming to an end.

Manuel Pellegrini may be keeping tabs on Elneny’s progress in Turkey before moving for him again next summer, where we should expect a new midfielder to arrive.

The 27-year-old would be the next Arsenal midfielder to move to the London Stadium in two years following Jack Wilshere’s 2018 summer arrival.
