West Ham have no plans to extend Pellegrini deal – and it should be the right decision

Manuel Pellegrini may currently have West Ham United fifth in the Premier League, but the club isn’t interested in entering talks over a new contract yet.

According to Football Insider, Pellegrini is open to extending his current three-year deal which expires in the summer of 2021.

However, co-owner and chairman David Sullivan is prepared to hold off negotiations until further proof of the team’s progress.

West Ham have lost just one league game all season – on the opening weekend against Manchester City – so excitement and optimism are certainly in East London air at the moment.

Pellegrini turned 66 last month and he’s likely to demand north of his current £200,000-a-week deal, so it’s no surprise West Ham are prepared to wait.

The Hammers are in a good moment right now, but things could be very different once his deal comes to an end at the end of next season so there’s no need to make any rash decisions.

He’s on a better wage than almost all other Premier League managers, so he must deliver good season at the London Stadium before contract talks begin.
