Merson unsure of West Ham’s top-six prospects – does he have a point?

Ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson has admitted he’s unsure whether West Ham United can achieve a top-six finish this season and has outlined one major factor in their prospects.

The Hammers have started the 2019-20 season off well and are currently sat in fifth, level on points with Merson’s former club who are fourth.

Now a pundit, Merson has had his say on Manuel Pellegrini’s chances of guiding West Ham – currently on a six-match unbeaten run in the Premier League – into the top six.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he explained:

There is a long way to go. The teams you are asking to finish in the top six – Leicester and West Ham – it is a big ask for them. Certain players have to stay fit for them, so I think it is between Chelsea, United and Arsenal who will finish in the top four.

Read West Ham’s verdict

It’s incredibly early to make an educated call on the club’s chance of achieving such a feat, but they’ve certainly gone the right way about it so far this term.

Pellegrini’s men have looked superb since that opening day defeat to champions Manchester City, defeating Manchester United and showing grit and determination to avoid defeat elsewhere.

Hopefully, with the Carabao Cup now out of the question, the Hammers can avoid distraction and keep the impressive run going through October.
