Man United eye £40m Longstaff pursuit – what does it mean for Rice’s future?

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a £40million pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, but it doesn’t necessarily pose as good news for West Ham United in regards to the future of Declan Rice.

According to the Daily Star, Man United are hoping that Newcastle’s early-season struggles will make for a hassle-free pursuit of their prized asset.

The report claims the Magpies value Longstaff at £55million, but there’s hope that £40m will be enough to bring him to Old Trafford.

He’s also said to be a higher priority than Rice in January, but that doesn’t mean West Ham fans can rest easy yet.

The chances of Rice jumping ship midway through what promises to be a good season for the Hammers were slim anyway, so it’d be understandable if United were to prioritise a move for Longstaff.

It’s common knowledge that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs at least two new midfielders, one of them being a defensive midfielder which Longstaff certainly is not.

Solskjaer’s transfer strategy seems to be young, British talent, which could make Rice the perfect star to target next summer.

The 20-year-old appears to be committed to helping West Ham for the long haul though, so hopefully, loyalty will ultimately overcome financial gain if United’s interest comes to fruition.
