Adrian named the ‘signing of the summer’ – were West Ham right to let him go?

On a low salary and impressing as deputy to Alisson, Liverpool believe the capture of Adrian on a free transfer was the ‘signing of the summer.’

According to Football Insider, the Reds believe securing the 32-year-old was a terrific piece of business, especially considering he left West Ham United for regular game time.

He’s started eight consecutive games for Liverpool, but that’s because of the injury Alisson picked up in the season opener against Norwich City.

He was said to have baulked at the £50,000-a-week contract the Hammers offered him in the summer, before leaving after 150 appearances.

Football Insider claim Crystal Palace and Real Betis were willing to offer him regular minutes, but nothing came to fruition towards the end of the window.

Read West Ham’s verdict

For wanting £50,000-a-week, West Ham were well within their rights to allow Adrian to depart on a free transfer.

It would’ve been surprising to see the Spaniard feature in more than 10 games this season with Lukasz Fabianski firmly first-choice, and with good reason too.

The signing of the summer? I’m not sure about that, but Adrian has deputised for the injured Alisson well at Liverpool so far.
