Hammers fans react as club shares footage from Defoe’s debut

When Jermain Defoe joined Tottenham Hotspur from West Ham United back in 2004, it’s fair to say he wasn’t the most popular of names around the Boleyn Ground.

That reputation has seemingly stuck amongst many, which makes the club’s decision to acknowledge his debut on social media yesterday morning all the more questionable.

Plenty took to the comments to publicise their disgruntlement with Defoe being recognised by the club…

Some supporters acknowledged Defoe in a positive light though…

Read West Ham’s verdict

Defoe was statistically more prolific a goalscorer at West Ham than during his first stint with Tottenham. It seems like decades ago he was sporting claret and blue though and that’s because, well, it was.

His debut was a joy to behold which makes the Hammers’ media team’s decision to post it more understandable, but negative reaction was inevitable.

Aged 36, Defoe is still going at Rangers, on loan from AFC Bournemouth and you’d be lying if you said he wasn’t one of the great English strikers of the current generation.
