Manchester United have been handed a monumental boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Ham United, with David de Gea finally committing his long-term future to the club.

The Spaniard has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the option of a further year, ending constant speculation surrounding his impending departure from Old Trafford.

De Gea has made a strong start to the new season, already keeping just five clean sheets less than his Premier League tally from a disappointing 2018-19 campaign.

And the major news could’ve really come at the worst time for West Ham for a number of reasons.

You could argue the 28-year-old stopper’s form at the back-end of last season was down to his mind being elsewhere, but his early performances would suggest he’s now firmly invested in United.

The Hammers can’t rely on De Gea’s mistakes to get a result at the London Stadium, and will instead be up against a world-class goalkeeper desperate to get this new chapter off to a good start.

It’s rather likely the whole United team will be instilled with confidence knowing De Gea’s at the club to stay too, which should make Sunday’s game no simple test.

By no means am I saying De Gea’s new United contract makes the visitors favourites for the match, but West Ham’s attackers will have to be at their sparkling best to cause some damage.
