# Hammers fans surprisingly slaughter Wilshere in Newport win

Despite scoring the opening goal at Rodney Parade, many West Ham United fans are slamming Jack Wilshere’s performance against Newport County.

Wilshere’s first-half opener was added to by Pablo Fornals after the break – both netting their first goals for the club – to secure West Ham’s place in the Carabao Cup Third Round.

These supporters weren’t happy with Wilshere’s display though, widely criticising the midfielder:

> Twitter: Would Wilshere and Sanchez start in Newport’s midfield? I have my doubts. (@thomasjrennie)

> Twitter: @WestHamWaycouk Is Wilshere washed? Good lord I hope not. I like him a lot, but he has looked basically useless (@EscocesPlik)

> Twitter: Wilshere has been shocking and Sanchez looks like he doesn’t want the ball because he’s too scared to lose it ![?](https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/12.0.0-1/svg/1f605.svg)![?](https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/12.0.0-1/svg/1f602.svg) (@Dom\_A\_King)

> Twitter: Wilshere haven’t a mare again. Nothing coming off for him. Looking like a little boys playing a mans game!! #WHUFC (@GeoffDowns)

> Twitter: Wilshere just doesn’t look as sharp as he did throughout pre season…

### READ WEST HAM’S VERDICT

Wilshere didn’t start the game that well; he looked a bit out of practice on the ball and was struggling to pick out his passes, but the mass criticism is very surprising.

If he hadn’t scored before half-time, the match could’ve been a lot less comfortable for the visitors and from that point, he looked great in midfield.

It’s unlikely he’ll start against Norwich City, but fans should be happy they have a now-confident player waiting to make an impact from the bench.
