West Ham United reportedly failed in a late attempt to sign versatile AC Milan star Diego Laxalt, but where would the Uruguay international have fitted in if he did move to the London Stadium?
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, West Ham and Newcastle United held talks for Laxalt late in the summer transfer window, but the negotiations were ‘uphill’ and therefore fell through.
The English transfer window has now closed, with the Hammers’ final piece of business seeing Grady Diangana join West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan after six incomings.

Manuel Pellegrini’s summer business has primarily focused on creative players, three being Eintracht Frankfurt striker Sebastien Haller, Villareal attacking midfielder Pablo Fornals and, most recently, Basel striker Albian Ajeti.
An underlying problem amongst fans over pre-season has been defence depth, and more specifically Aaron Cresswell not looking up to scratch. Laxalt could have come in and offered real competition for Arthur Masuaku at left-back.
Also, Laxalt is comfortable further upfield on the left side which could have seen Felipe Anderson used more centrally. The report seems a bit out of the blue, but the more you think about it, the more the 26-year-old’s arrival would have been welcomed.
