Josh Cullen has returned to Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan move before tomorrow evening’s transfer deadline, but is just time he just left West Ham United on a permanent basis?
According to Football Insider, Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has been pursuing the 23-year-old all summer and now an agreement has been reached for him to rejoin the club he helped gain promotion from League One last term.
The South London club lost midfield trio Joe Aribo, Patrick Bauer and Anfernee Dijksteel ahead of their return to the second tier of English football, but Cullen – highly-rated by West Ham – will offer a huge boost.

I’m very confident Cullen will return to the Valley and contribute to Charlton’s bid to stay in the Championship, but maybe it’s time he left the London Stadium permanently if he hasn’t got a place in the first-team.
23 years old is young, but not *that* young and he should now be fighting for a place in Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield. However, Declan Rice – aged 20 – has surpassed Cullen now and the fact 33-year-old Carlos Sanchez has been prioritised says it all.
He has a year left on his Hammers deal, and it would probably be best for all parties if he was allowed to join either Charlton or another Championship club permanently upon the expiration because he is good enough for the division.
Don’t get me wrong, it’d be excellent to see him succeed at the club, but he’s getting to the stage of his career where loan moves to Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton shouldn’t be good enough. He needs somewhere to belong.
